The world is your mirror
I was recently reminded of a pivotal turning point in my journey. One that had the biggest influence on me changing my life.
Back in 2005, I had returned from a two-year working holiday stint in London - a rite of passage for so many twenty-something Aussies!
I returned unsettled, confused and anxious about what I was doing with my life (I've been in this position quite a few times!). Safe to say I was in my quarter-life crisis, and I wasn't handling it very well.
In a bid to find an answer,
I did what I always do when I have a question;
I googled it!
I tapped in…
“Spiritual psychic help”
This led me to Brenda Kay, an intuitive healer on a tiny island just north of where I lived.
The generosity of this beautiful woman is not lost on me.
I don’t recall booking a session that day (although I later did).
I just had some questions… spiritual questions.
She opened her home, made me a cup of tea and we talked.
I don’t recall much of what I said or asked.
I imagine my anxiety and incessantly churning thoughts came tumbling out of my mouth in a tangled mess of confusion and panic.
She then said the words that would steer me into an unfolding understanding that forever changed my life;
“The world is your mirror Mandie.”
Um, say what!?
It was the first time I had heard such a concept.
I paused, “Hang on a minute, I need to ponder this. So you are saying that what I see in the world is somehow a reflection of me?”
Brenda explained that what I see and experience in my life, is a reflection of what is going on inside me.
If my inner state is in turmoil, then I will see and experience turmoil.
If my inner state is in joy, then I will see and experience joy.
What we all see and experience in our world, is a reflection of the collective inner states of what's going on inside of all us on the planet.
Whoa! Mind. Officially. Blown.
No longer could I dismiss my influence on my life.
I had to take full responsibility for what I experienced.
And it had to start from within.
The Dalai Lama said:
"We can never obtain peace in the outer world, until we make peace with ourselves"
I got it!
It prompted me to take responsibility for shifting my inner state to change my life, as well as contributing to shifting the world at large.
Michael Gerber said it too:
"The world isn't in chaos, we are".
As global unrests rises, it's easy to see the chaos externally.
And while I believe we each have a responsibility to take the actions as we're called for liberation and justice, I also know we need to tend to the turmoil within ourselves.
This is what has driven my own personal work all the years since.
I committed to reducing the turmoil within through mastering my mind, opening my heart, tending lovingly to my body and connecting to spirit.
It's a lifelong practice and now drives my work with the people who get that the world won't change until we do.
I talked about this more on the podcast - as I reflect on the peace I am finding despite the pain and grief of recent events (both in my own life and collectively).
