When you want to quit your job but can’t (yet)
It is an emotional journey when your job isn’t what you want to do anymore.
Perhaps you’ve learnt all you can, achieved what you wanted, or your values have changed and you now want more purpose and meaning in your work.
Not everyone has the luxury or privilege to quit their job when they know they’re done with it. I was fortunate once to use some of the proceeds of a house sale to fund a career reset in my twenties, which allowed me to quit my job and spend 18 months travelling and volunteering abroad. I’ve had clients use money from a redundancy; or had partners able to support them; or even an inheritance to fund a career change and quest for their true path.
But many of us, myself included at other points in my life, can’t quit their job until the next step is more certain and clear before making a leap from the secure income of our current job.
It’s tough when you know you’re done but can’t move on just yet.
So how do you deal with the daily reality of showing up to a job that is no longer a fit and not feel desperately stuck there?
Here are my top ten tips:
1. Shift your focus and perspective.
It’s a strange anomaly that once you accept what is and stop fighting against it, things have a way of changing or evolving. Trust the perfection in the process, trust your destiny is unfolding and remind yourself this is only temporary and you are on a path to something greater and more meaningful.
2. Don’t complain
What you resist, persists, so overcome the temptation to complain about your current position, rise above any drama and don’t fall into being a victim. These are all facets of ego, which will hold you apart from your soul’s higher consciousness which knows your next right step.
3. Reflect on what you’ve gained from your current role
What have you achieved? How have you grown? What have you learnt? What clarity has this role given you? How will your experience serve your next steps? There are no wrong turns on your life path, so how has this served your greater journey?
4. List the positive aspects and express gratitude for your current role
Whether it’s the conditions, your autonomy, the people you work with - anything that aligns your energy back to your Inner Spirit and that of appreciation. Gratitude is one of the most powerful emotions that will open you to the divine flow and your highest good (and it also feels WAY better than lamenting the current situation).
5. Explore what lessons there may still be for you to learn;
This role may be the perfect training ground for you to develop an aspect of your character, heal from a past wound, empower yourself, develop a new skill, or practice mindfulness and compassion. It can be a spiritual training ground to practice that outside conditions don’t need to change in order for you to find peace.
6. Spend time in nature before, during or after work.
Nature is a healer. Go for a walk or swim, a surf, or simply put your bare feet on the earth in a park or the backyard to help you re-centre and remind yourself of the larger path unfolding for you.
7. Examine any limiting beliefs that are holding you back
Do you believe you deserve better? Do you feel confident in what you have to offer, the skills you have and experience you’ve gained? Are you afraid of change? Write out any limiting beliefs and reframe them to be more positive - what are alternative beliefs you can believe instead?
8. Shift your energy to connect more deeply to your Soul
Meditation, yoga, singing, tapping, journaling, dance, chant, reiki, music (this song by Alex Murdoch does it for me every time!). By connecting to the energy of your soul, you will more readily access your intuition and will hear the guidance for your next right step.
9. Pray
“Dear divine/god/universe; please help me to accept my current position while guiding me on my next steps of my journey. I hand over to the Divine any negative thoughts, frustrations or impatience I have about my current role and the pace at which I want change to happen in my life. I trust I am in the right place at the right time; and that my calling is unfolding perfectly. Please use me as an instrument for your love and help me find the ways to shine my light wherever I am.”
10. Start taking some action towards change
Start a savings account to help fund your future; assess the possibility of going part-time to free up more of your time or downsizing your life so your expenses aren’t as high; do a short course that interests you; take up a new hobby that sparks your curiosity; volunteer for a cause you care about or hire a coach to help you explore your next steps.
